Why specialized retirement advice matters

What A Retirement Planning Financial Advisor Does

Smart Withdrawal Sequencing

We map out when and how to draw from taxable accounts, traditional IRAs, and Roth IRAs to reduce taxes and extend your portfolio’s life. Advanced scenario modeling helps coordinate your withdrawal strategy with Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs), income needs, and long-term goals.

RMD And Pension Strategy

We help you select pension payout options, coordinate them with 401(k) and IRA assets, and plan ahead for RMDs so they do not create surprise tax bills. Your income streams are structured for stability today and flexibility for the future.

Social Security And Annuities

We analyze your Social Security claiming options, including spousal benefits, to help you choose the timing that supports your long-term plan. When appropriate, we integrate annuities and other guaranteed income tools to create reliable, predictable retirement paychecks.

Longevity And Healthcare Planning

We factor in rising healthcare costs, Medicare decisions, and long life expectancy so your income strategy is built to last. Scenario analyses prepare for what-if events, from early retirement to unexpected medical needs, giving you a safety-first framework.

Inflation And Stress Testing

Using robust stress testing like Monte Carlo simulations, we check how your plan holds up to inflation, market volatility, and sequence-of-returns risk. You see probabilities and tradeoffs clearly, so you can choose a sustainable withdrawal rate with confidence.

Coordinated Wealth Management

Your retirement income plan is fully integrated with broader financial planning services, including investment advisory, tax-aware portfolio management, and legacy and estate strategies. Everything works together to support a smooth transition from saving to spending.

Retirement in the West Valley — What Changes When You Move Here

Goodyear has become one of the fastest-growing retirement destinations in the country, with the over-65 population up 61% in five years. Arizona helps: there is no state tax on Social Security benefits, and the state's flat 2.5% income tax applies to most other retirement income. That makes Arizona one of the most tax-efficient retirement states anywhere — but the catch is that withdrawal sequencing matters more here than in higher-tax states, because the wider gap between marginal federal and state rates changes the optimal Roth-vs-traditional draw order. We see this most clearly with PebbleCreek and Cantamia clients who arrive with two or three legacy 401(k)s and an old pension, expecting to "just turn on income" — and discover their first three years of withdrawals can either lock in or undo a decade of tax efficiency.

How We Work With Goodyear Retirees in PebbleCreek, Estrella, and Litchfield Park

A typical retirement-planning engagement at our Goodyear office starts with consolidation: rolling old employer plans into IRAs, choosing between pension lump-sum and annuity options, coordinating Medicare enrollment with any remaining COBRA or marketplace coverage, and modeling Social Security claiming ages against the actual portfolio. From there we build the year-by-year withdrawal sequence — Roth conversions in the low-bracket gap years between retirement and required minimum distributions, asset-location across taxable, Roth, and pre-tax buckets, and tax-aware rebalancing as Arizona residents. We meet at our office at 1616 N Litchfield Rd, by video, or in your community if that is easier.

FAQ

I'm 5–10 years out from retirement and live in the West Valley. When should I actually start planning?
Now. The decisions that move the needle most — Roth conversions, Social Security timing, pension election (lump sum vs. annuity), how much to save in pre-tax vs. Roth in your final working years — all need a 5-to-10-year runway to optimize. Waiting until your last day at work means you've already locked in tax brackets and account types you can't easily change.
When should I take Social Security — 62, full retirement age, or 70?
There is no universal answer; there is a math answer specific to your situation. We look at your earnings history, your spouse's claiming options (spousal and survivor benefits matter more than most people realize), your tax bracket, your other retirement assets, and your health and longevity expectations. For many of our Goodyear clients, delaying past full retirement age makes sense — but not always, and we'll show you the breakeven on paper.
How does Arizona's tax treatment of retirees compare to the state I'm moving from?
Favorably, in most cases. Arizona has no estate tax and no inheritance tax. Social Security is exempt from Arizona state income tax. Up to $2,500 of certain federal/state pension income is excluded. Compared to California, Oregon, Minnesota, or New York, the income-tax savings on a $200K+ retirement income can be material. We help new arrivals get their domicile properly established so the state they left can't reach back for income tax.
How much do I actually need to retire?
The honest answer is: less than the internet tells you, if your plan is good — and more than you think, if it isn't. Instead of a magic number, we model the actual cash flow: your guaranteed income (Social Security, pensions), your spending in retirement (which is rarely flat — it usually has a "go-go," "slow-go," and "no-go" phase), Medicare and healthcare, and inflation. Then we stress-test against bad sequences of returns.
Should I do Roth conversions, and if so, how much per year?
For most clients between retirement and age 73 (when RMDs start), the answer is yes — some amount. The window between retiring and starting RMDs is often the lowest-tax period of your life, and it’s a one-time chance to move money into a Roth permanently tax-free for you and your heirs. We model the tax bill of doing nothing vs. converting strategically and choose the bracket-fill amount that makes the math work. Converting from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA is a taxable event.
